FORT WORTH -- Barbara Joan Oliver, 79, passed away peacefully in her home Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Calvario Funeral Chapel (formerly Shannons North), 111 W. Northside Drive. Visitation with family and public viewing: 10 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials: Her memory may be honored by donations to the Humane Society of Fort Worth or the Fort Worth Nature Center. Joan, as she was known to family and friends, was the daughter of Richard "Red" Oliver and Marian Miller Oliver. After her birth, Sept. 16, 1934, in Marysville, Calif., the family returned to Fort Worth. A graduate of Texas Woman's University, she proudly served in the United States Marine Corps obtaining the rank of captain. After her military service, she was an athletic coach for Fort Worth ISD and later a counselor for the Fort Worth ISD's New Lives Program. She was a member of the Women's Marine Association and a friend to the Lake Worth Critters. Survivors: She is survived by her brothers, Richard Oliver and wife, Sherry, of Peaster, Claude Oliver of North Richland Hills; two nephews; one niece; three grandnephews; two grandnieces; many friends; and hundreds of Lake Critters.
